College Soccer News - Men's National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 18, 2020

The College Soccer News Team of the Week features impact players on both sides of the ball who contributed to the success that their team enjoyed during a week of play that included more than the usual number of of close contests. 

James Brighton

Clemson

Brighton returned the rebound of teammate Grayson Barber's shot into the bottom right corner of the net and drove a header into back of the net from the middle of the box in overtime to give Clemson a hard fought 2-1 win over a determined Duke team.  

Deandre Kerr

Syracuse

Kerr made a nice move to create the angle he needed to score from just inside the box and also found the back of the net after receiving a cross from Hilli Goldhar in Syracue's 2-2 tie with ACC foe Louisville. Syracuse is 0-2-1. 

Kimarni Smith

Clemson

Smith scored from within the box after receiving a cross from Grayson Barber and assisted on Luis Felipe Fernandez-Salvador game winning goal in Clemson's 2-1 win over Wake Forest.  He also provided the helper on James Brighton's game winning goal over Duke. Clemson is 4-1-0.  

Kyle Holcomb

Holcomb decisively placed a header into the back of the net in overtime after receiving a well played and timed cross from sophomore midfielder Omar Hernandez. The Deacons rebound from a 2-1 loss to Clemson with a 1-0 win over UNC to improve to 4-1-0.  

Valentin Noel

Noel scored twice in the first half to play a key role in the Panthers 3-2 on the road win in overtime against Virginia. Noel has scored four goals to date for the Panthers who are now 4-0-0 overall with a 3-0-0 mark in ACC action.  

David Jackson

Navy 

Jackson contributed the assist on junior defender Matt Nocita's goal and scored the game-winner  when he alertly returned  the rebound of his own missed penalty kick back into the net. The Midshipmen open the fall 2020 season with a solid  2-1 on the road win over NC State. 

Kalil ElMedkhar

Kentucky 

ElMedkhar scored out of a give and go with Eythor Bjorgolfsson and assisted on the goal scored by teammate Bailey Rouse in Kentucky's 3-1 win over Mercer. He also converted a penalty kick in Kentucky's 2-1 win over UAB. The Wildcats improve to 5-1-0.  

Andrew Bennett

Georgia State

Bennett scored twice and assisted on the goal scored by teammate Matthew Fearnley to help power Georgia State past rival Georgia Southern 3-1. Georgia State also defeated UAB 4-1 earlier in the week. The Panthers improve to 7-1-0 with a 2-1-0 mark in Sun Belt Conference play.

Coastal Carolina 

Lage scored in the Chanticleers 3-2 win over Central Arkansas with an assist from Marcello Jones. He also controlled a loose ball from within the box and deposited it into the back of the net to give Coastal Carolina the edge they needed to top Central Arkansas 1-0 in overtime.  

Arturo Ordonez

Ordonez drove a header into the back of the frame in overtime out of a corner kick served in by sophomore defender Raphael Crivello to give the Panthers the edge they needed to top Virginia 3-2 in Charlottesville. Pitt improves to 4-0-0.

Saunders had a nine save evening in goal in Coastal Carolina's 3 to 2 win over Central Arkansas on Friday and ten save contest in the Chanticleers 1-0 win in overtime against Central Arkansas on Sunday. 

 

College Soccer News - Women's National Team Of The Week - Week Ending October 18, 2020

It was a week during which there were several unexpected outcomes and plenty of closely contested contests. The College Soccer News Team of the Week showcases individuals on both sides of the ball who were difference makers. 

Leilanni Nesbeth

Sophomore

Florida State

Nesbeth used her touch on the ball to create the space and angle she needed to drive a shot into the back of the frame from thirty yards out in FSU's 4-1 win over Pitt. Nesbeth also made a nice secondary run into space to finish a pass from redshirt senior Malia Berkely in FSU's 4-3 win on the road over Virginia.

Troy 

Babineaux's first goal at Troy was a big one. She drove a shot into the upper right corner of the net from twenty-five yards out that gave Troy the edge they needed to upset Coastal Carolina 1-0. Sophomore forward Melissa Kuya-Strobel provided the assist on the goal and Lindsey LaRoche earned the shutout in goal.

Central Arkansas

Brough powered Central Arkansas to a 3-1 win over Missouri State with a two goal evening. She skillfully chipped a shot into the back of the net and drove a shot into the bottom left corner of the frame that was set up by a nice move and cross from junior midfielder Morgan Rollow.  The Bears are 6-2-1. 

Talia Dellaperuta

Dellaperuta recorded her first career goal when she sent the rebound of teammate Rachel Jones' shot into the back of the frame in the Tar Heels 2-0 win over Syracuse. She also scored from the top of the box in North Carolina's 3-1 win on the road over Boston College. The Tar Heels improve to 6-0-0. 

Samantha Chang

South Carolina

Chang made a nice run into open space after creating a turnover and scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in South Carolina's 2-1 win on the road over a highly regarded Arkansas team. Chang's goal was set up by a nice combination of passes from Claire Griffiths and Catherine Barry.  The Gamecocks improve to 4-1-0.  

Haley Berg

Texas 

Berg who is from Celina, Texas scored out of a free kick from twenty-two yards out to give Texas the edge they needed to top Iowa State 1-0 in a Big 12 Conferece contest. The goal was Berg's second of the season and 22nd of her career. Texas is 3-3-0.

Texas A and M

Olivieri was again a force on the offensive side of the ball for the Maroon and White. She scored twice during a span of a little less than three minutes to power the Aggies past Mississippi State 3-0.  Texas A and M improves to 3-1-0. 

Kaela Hansen

Kansas 

Hansen was a key part of a rock solid Kansas team oriented defense that along with keeper  Sarah Peters among others shutout Oklahoma State 1-0 at Rock Chalk Park in this Big 12 contest. Kansas improves to 4-1-0.   

Sarah Houchin

Auburn 

Houchin anchored a solid  Auburn defense that showed a lot of grit in posting a 1-0 win in overtime against Mississippi and a 1-0 win on the road over a very good Georgia team in which the Tigers played a man down for the final 35 minutes of the match. Auburn improves to 2-0-1.

The junior defender made the run that she needed to make to be in position to net the golden goal in the 96th minute of play with a double assist from Marykate McGuire and Karlie Paschall. She also provided a helper on one of sister Maggie Graham's two goals in Duke's 4-0 victory over Syracuse. Duke improves to 5-1-2 overall.

Parks had a nine save evening between the pipes in her first-career start to anchor a Demon Deacon defense that shutout Notre Dame 1-0 in South Bend. Wake Forest improves to 2-4-1 overall with a 2-3-1 mark in ACC play.
